Japanese Internment in Louisiana: Camp Livingston, Cultural Identities, and War-time Anxieties
Presented by Dr. Samantha Perez, Ph.Dd, Graduate Coordinator, Dept of History & Political Science & Secretary of Japan Society of New Orleans
When war-time anxieties led to the internment of both aliens and citizens of "politically suspect" ethnicities, Camp Livingston outside Alexandria became a locus of Japanese presence in Louisiana. This paper examines Louisiana attitudes towards Japanese identity during the war, the experiences of those of Japanese descent housed at Camp Livingston, and the response of local populations to the realities of nearby internment.
